Today, as I was prepping to teach my second to last class of Organizational Behavior, I came across this TEDx Talk by Shawn Achor, The Happy Secret to Better Work. And if you haven’t seen it before, I highly recommend watching the video below.
He is funny, witty and 1000% on target!
So many take-aways. So many tidbits of information to share with someone you work with, care about, share time and space with. But one of the biggest and most meaningful for me…
Don’t be merely average.
And in what is the end of November, early December, I see a lot of people working really hard to be “average.” Trying to out-do the latest party…buying the bigger, more expensive present…decorating the bigger tree…It’s exhausting just hearing about it.
To me, that’s being average. Why do you want to do what everyone else is doing?…if it’s driving you mad, making you exhausted…making you feel stressed out…!
If it serves you, then keep doing it.
But if it doesn’t serve you. If you are feeling it mentally, physically and emotionally, why are you doing it?
In my mind, not being “merely average” means tapping into YOU…And while it is important do that all year ’round, this time of year can be challenge to keep on YOUR path.
So, talk to someone and share a compliment. Say ‘Thank you.’ That in my book is not being average. If it were, then more people would do it. But you know that’s not the case when saying ‘Thank you’ gets you a smile – often times, from surprise. And when sharing a compliment, being kind and saying ‘Thank you’ become mediocre then we can move onto other more, complex things.
But for now…tap into YOU. Share a smile. Share a compliment.
Fly in beauty and Grace.
With a Smile,
PS – My students loved Shawn’s TEDx talk. And they are taking up a 7-day gratitude challenge. For 7 days, they will write down one thing they are grateful for or a positive experience they have had in the past 24 hours.
After watching the video, what is something you can do?
