This is my favorite Dr. Seuss book.
It’s timeless. In fact, I read it to my 8 and 9 year old boys last night.
There are so many things I love about this book. But a BIG take away for is…You will go. You will try. You will do. Sometimes you succeed. Sometimes you don’t.
But you never give up.
You don’t give up because as Srini Rao writes:
But maybe you’re waiting….
Waiting for inspiration
Waiting until the kinks are worked out
Waiting for the perfect time
Waiting until your art is good enough to be shared Waiting until the next revision or edit
Waiting for permission
You have permission to start, permission to suck, and permission to fail. Actually, you don’t need it.
You’ve always had it. Nobody can give it to you. If you’re waiting not to suck, you’ll be waiting forever.
So what are you waiting for?
Whenever I have waited for something, I have been miserable. Waiting for…
- the doctor to call
- the baby to come
- the email saying I got the job
- the perfect opportunity to come along
You can’t take adventures when you are waiting.
Life is harder to enjoy when you are waiting.
Time still passes by when you are waiting and you are missing it.
And do. Something.
