As many of you know, I celebrated my 40th birthday this week. And I have to admit that I have had more reflection that I anticipated. Usually a birthday, for me, is just another number and an opportunity to do more with my new year than I did with the last one.
But this year, the combination of turning 40 and reading Srini Rao’s recent book, Unmistakable: Why Only is Better than Best book has given me real pause. I have the corners of pages turned down, notes on the page, highlighted sentences, not to mention other notes I wrote down in a separate notebook.
And did I mention, I’m going to read it again?
It is one of those books that feels like it was written for me. You know the kind where you find yourself nodding your head, sympathizing with the author or even talking out loud…it’s that kind of book.
And while there are many take-aways from the book (and I know there will be more), one of the bigger ones for me right now is the idea of Trusting Your Intuition. Listen to your body.
By not listening to yourself or your body, chances are you have made some less-than-great decisions, such as:
- Taking that job…you know, the wrong one
- Committing to volunteering even when you know you don’t quite have the time
- Dating the wrong person or worse, staying in a relationship you know isn’t good for you
And that’s just to name a few…
Now that I have been 40 for 4 days, I am making a commitment to myself and I would love to hear what commitment you can make for yourself, too.
- Listen to my intuition
- Be aware of the “red flag” signals my body sends to me
- Stop playing small
- BE…be myself, be who I know I can be…just BE
In Srini’s book, he shares an interview with executive coach Suzannah Scully and she said:
“I’ve done that man times in my life, that ‘should’ path. And every time it turns out poorly. The universe first gives you a whisper, then a shout, then a two-by-four to the head. Out of fear, most of us wait for the two-by-four before we trust ourselves.
So, I will:
- Listen for that Whisper
- Trust myself
- No longer try to be the Best but to me my truest, best Unmistakable Self!
What will you commit to?
